I think that really depends on what you want to get out of the trip. When i went backpacking last summer I really enjoyed a number of things about doing it solo, including the flexibility of staying somewhere longer than you were planning as there's more things you want to do there. Also i really enjoyed the planning and booking of everything as i felt in control and could do what I wanted, when I wanted, and if I got reccomendations of where to go I could change my trip easily. I must admit I've never been with a company so I can't give the other side of the argument but I personally enjoy doing it without a company
