is anyone put off travelling this year due to covid? or has anyone had any trips cancelled due to covid? i have i had a few short trips to Denmark and Switzerland cancelled but since lock-down has started to be lifted i want to be away, im already looking at trips to Italy and Portugal in august.
My family and friends seem to be put off by the idea of me travelling this year but what is everyone's opinions on this?
thanks for reading
This year it was my year abroad from uni( compulsory in my course) where I was going to study in Italy for 6 months and spend another 6 months in Argentina working for a translation company. However, it got obviously cancelled and I had to adapt completely and change my course at uni. Another incident is that I am Portuguese but living in the UK and 2 days ago my flight to Portugal got cancelled. That was going to be my short trip to see my family but now there is a big uncertainty. And since I've been wanderlusting so bad, I've started to plan a backpacking trip to South America next year. Hope that everything goes as planned.
I’ve planned a short trip this August, in Europe. I‘ll be going to Berlin, Dresden and then Paris (total of 11 days). Even thought there will still be social distancing etc. there will be fewer tourists and it will definitely be an interesting holiday! I think this is a unique experience to see popular destinations in a different light.
We have our flights booked for Bali in August, I think if everything goes well the borders will open in September, which pushes us back a month but not too bad. we are planning on doing a 2-4 year trip around SE Asia with a working holiday visa in Taiwan. Then going around America, north, central and south with a few stop overs in Aus and NZ to see some friend and family, over the next few years. We've been saving up solidly for like 2 years now and we really don't want to push it back any longer. But I'm getting super worried that backpacking will be forever changed with 'social distancing' and early curfews for bars, which may turn people off from going until the middle of 2021. We don't want to get there and be the only ones travelling around for the first year as meeting people is the best part of travelling.
So we're wondering would it just be best to suck it up and work a few more months and go next year or are people still going out and planning big trips for the end of this year?! 🦄
I’m looking at going to Australia in January 2020, if the borders are open by then. Does anyone know which places to avoid for layovers? As I don’t want to be not allowed into the country just because of where I’ve had a layover!
I think I’m going to avoid flying this year and just so road trips (I live in the UK so can access Europe easily) and then I’m planning on treating myself to a fancy holiday in January if all goes well!!!
I'm in year 12 and hoping to take a travel gap year after my A levels next year before going to uni to study medicine. COVID has complicated things because I don't know if I'll be able to travel next September. It's complicated by having OCD, definitely not helped by coronavirus! Does anyone know how likely any of the following would be to happen?
Medical internship in Nepal
Working visa in Australia
ICS - international citizenship service
Backpacking Vietnam and maybe Thailand/Laos?
Hopefully, 2021-22 can be a bit more normal!
My friend and I just graduated uni and were planning on going on a big 12 month backpacking trip around Australia and SE Asia this year. We’ve obviously pushed that back until 2021 but I’m still super worried and anxious on if travel will even be open by then. We want to experience the proper backpacking life/ experience and I can’t help but have this awful feeling that things will never be the same, especially in terms of travelling. I‘m using this trip as the thing I do before is start my “real” life and that means I’m holding off on organising / preparing to work abroad as I’ve always planned because I don’t wanna settle down anywhere to then just up and leave for a year for this trip. Is anyone else feeling anxious/ worried over what the future of travel/ backpacking specifically will be 😬😥
I was due to be backpacking Australia and New Zealand earlier on in the year- my first ever solo adventure! After hearing from friends that they might not be opening borders until mid next year, I decided to book myself a week in Croatia end of August. I have such a longing to get away anywhere! One of the positives is that hopefully the more time we spend at home=more money=longer trips!
At least we are all not alone in this situation. Somehow it helps to hear that others also planned their big trips. But it makes me sad. So sad for all of us. In October i wanted to go on a one year backpackingtrip (minimum :D ) trough south east Asia. beginning in india and nepal. I wanted to learn so many things there. Now I don't know when this is gonna happen. I am planning this since two years now, i recently finished my university and wanted to figure out what i exactly want to do for a living later in my life in combination with the things i learn on my travels. Well...Let's see if atleast my Balkan travel will happen in October instead. It is really hard to plan anything, when travel is the most important thing for you since two years. Is anyone else in this situation? Finished school, not able to take a job, because you want to leave as soon as you can? :
I had a backpacking trip planned for Spain/Portugal/Morocco from May-July :( Luckily I was able to work during covid and am saving up to have a bigger and better trip hopefully next year! It was a difficult reality to see my plans get cancelled, but finding the silver lining in saving up more money has helped me a lot
This year I'll stick to short local trips only. I'm a German living in London, so next week I'll travel back to Germany to see my family. Other than that, I have plenty of hikes and bike rides planned in the UK. I'm making myself see this year as an opportunity to prepare for future trips: I can save money, make big plans for next year and improve my outdoor and language skills. (I should add that this thinking doesn't always help, I'm still desperate to go somewhere new again) :)
I was planning on going to Italy and maybe to Iceland this year but because of this situation I couldn't go. I was also starting to think about some other options of places to visit but I guess I'll have to wait a little longer 😄
And for everyone thinking about visiting Portugal I definitely recomend it!!! It's an amazing country with a lot of things to offer (delicious food, nice people, beautiful sceneries, a lot of history,...). If you have any questions or need any suggestions feel free to ask.
I am also from Germany. At the moment I am planning a trip to Portugal or Greece (still not sure as the numbers in Portugal are increasing and so on). I know its pretty risky but I will definitely travel this summer even though it will be a totally different experience than the last years😅
I was supposed to do my A-levels this year and then go on a girls holiday to Zante which I would have left for today but that as well as my world challenge expedition to Cambodia has been cancelled.
I'm taking a gap year and I'm hoping to be able to travel to Australia, New Zealand and volunteer in Fiji starting in January. Fingers crossed they open their borders by then or give some indication to when that's likely to happen so that if its off the cards I can begin to alter my plans because I've been desperate to have a travel gap year since I was 14 so I would be heartbroken if it didn't live up to my dream.
I wanted 2020 to be my travel year, as it is the first year I am earning money. Now all the borders are closed and because I am from Germany, which was quite badly affected, I am not allowed to enter most countries outside the EU. I had a trip to Spain, Spitzbergen and Canada cancelled for this year... Scientists are also anticipating Covid to become a seasonal thing until a vaccine is found and widely available, so everything is up in the air atm and I feel so lost... I just want to book some travel to look forward to.
Are any of you booking things and just trying to be positive or are you careful about managing your expectations of travel in the next years as well?
I had loads of trips cancelled this year. However my partner and I have been planning a backpacking trip for July 2021 and we’re worried we won’t be able to do everything on our list even next year.
I'm also looking at Portugal for this October, luckily I'm still able to go to belgium this july! hopefully Australia will open their borders soon :)
